The Mark
Her target emerged from one of the boutiques, a man in his early forties clad in a slick suit, the sort of man who could smile and slither his way through politics and corporate warfare alike. He was surrounded by two burly bodyguards, both keeping their eye on the street, but neither noticing her despite the attention she pulled. She had planned it that way. It wasn’t about being invisible—sometimes, standing out in the right way could make you blend in better than any disguise.
Elyse checked her watch—11:45PM. Everything was on schedule. Moments like these weren’t driven by adrenaline or nerves; she’d been down this road before. If everything went smoothly, her presence here would just be a footnote in chaos soon to break loose. She toyed with an earring, activating the discreet earpiece embedded inside.
“James, is the system disarmed?” she spoke softly, eyes fixed on her mark while awaiting a reply.
There was a hiss of static, and after a brief crackle, her partner’s voice came through. “You’re clear. The next pulse happens in exactly three minutes. Better be fast after it hits.”
A ghost of a smile graced her lips. Perfect timing.
The Strike
She waited, meticulously counting off the seconds as the man and his guards paused just outside the armored van. They were laughing at something he’d said, completely unaware that within moments, their world would come crashing down around them.
Her phone buzzed—a signal. Right on cue, the power flickered across the entire street. The neon lights that gave the city its usual glitter darkened, and suddenly everything fell into an eerie silence. Elyse stood, no longer just the elegant woman in the coral romper but now something far more dangerous.
With one swift motion, she pulled the sleek device from her pocket, a low hum emanating from it as it activated. The guards jolted their heads, looking around, and that’s when Elyse moved—like a dancer in perfect rhythm with the night.
Every step was measured. Every move precise. In seconds, she was upon them, her coral romper flaring elegantly as she slid past the first distracted guard. She pressed her device against the van’s lock, and a green light pulsed—success. The doors quietly hissed open.
The second guard had no chance to react as she swept one leg forward, kicking him squarely in the chest, taking him down with sharp efficiency. His companion mumbled into his earpiece just too late, as a stun dart she flicked from her wrist immobilized him in the next breath.
The mark—the suited man—just stared at her, shock branding his face. “Who—Who are you?” he stammered.
Elyse tossed her sunglasses aside and grinned. “The one who’s about to ruin your night.”
In seconds, she was inside the van, securing the tech, her pulse calm and steady. This was what she lived for, not the glamorous city nights or fancy clothes. She’d mastered the art of blending into the scene, only to strike when least expected.
The Escape
With the tech in hand, she dashed into the narrow alleys, disappearing into the labyrinth of the city’s streets before anyone could realize what had happened. By the time the blackouts restored, the van was empty, the men were unconscious, and Elyse was just another passerby in the distance.
James’s voice crackled back in. “Mission accomplished, I take it?”
“Accomplished would be an understatement,” Elyse replied with a smirk, glancing at the device now safely tucked in her bag. She stepped back into the noisy din of the vibrant street, pulling across the shades—a predator slipping right back into the crowd.
“I’ll meet you at the rendezvous,” she stated, the sound of her strappy sandals tapping against the sidewalk as she strode confidently away from the chaos she’d left behind—just another element of this glowing city.
Tonight, the city belonged to her.
The End.
