The Last Wave Augur

The air reeked of salt and ash. A towering wall of water loomed over the broken city, gnashing at the jagged remnants of skyscrapers that jutted like broken bones. Below it, a lone figure stood motionless, her vibrant green hair defying gravity, spiraling upward as if alive. Her sleek black bodysuit clung to her, shimmering faintly in the ghostly light of the encroaching tsunami. Around her, the earth trembled, the world threatening to collapse into chaos.

The ruins of Neo Atlantis stretched out behind her—a graveyard of glass domes and steel arches, remnants of a once-proud city that had boasted of its mastery over the oceans. Now, it was a hollow shell, drowned in despair and punctured by fires flickering in defiance of the coming deluge.

A battered holographic drone hovered nearby, sputtering broken fragments of its once-pristine telemetry display. “Augur,” it crackled, addressing her with a voice distorted by damage. “The Wave detects human life. Eighty-seven souls.”

It wasn’t a voice Augur—her chosen name after she abandoned the one given to her in another life—wanted to hear. With a flick of her wrist, arcs of glowing green energy snaked around her in response to her unspoken command. The drone stuttered and fell silent, watching as her power coalesced into a vortex of raw psychic force.

“Eighty-seven people,” she murmured under her breath, her emerald eyes scanning the ruined skyline. Slamming her boot into the broken asphalt, she tilted her head skyward. “Not nearly enough to rebuild a world.”

The tsunami roared louder, as if answering her. Wisps of cloud coalesced into a tempest, circling above her head. She clenched her fists, and the glowing vortex expanded, creating a barrier laced with streaks of pulsing green. The rumbling storm and churning sea seemed alive now, their rage building to a crescendo.

A Memory of Ash

The image of a young girl’s face flashed before her eyes—a child with soft black curls smeared with soot. Her tiny hands had clutched a seashell like a talisman, the only thing holding her together as their world crumbled. Augur remembered dangling that same shell from a green string around the girl’s neck. Just before the fires came. Just before the screams.

“You’re their last hope,” someone had told her. She couldn’t remember who anymore. The words came back distorted, drowned by the years of solitude and noise. The child, though, had stayed vivid, locked in her mind like a splinter too deep to pull free.

That child hadn’t survived the last collapse. Augur had promised herself no one else would perish without her doing something about it.

A Challenger in the Wind

A sudden chill rippled through the air, slicing through the heat of the encroaching storm. From amidst the ruins, a man emerged, his shadow elongating across the cracked pavement. He wore a weathered long coat stitched together from ragged pieces of tactical fabric, dyed a faded gray but catching flashes of orange in the dim light. His gaunt face bore scars, each one like a story he would never tell, and a hand-rolled cigarette hung lazily from his scarred lips.

“Stopping a wave with glowing fists, huh?” His voice cut through the cacophony without effort, casual yet razor-edged. “Never thought I’d see the day.”

Augur didn’t bother turning. Her glowing barrier flickered at the edges as the tsunami gained ground. “Turn back, scavenger,” she warned, her voice cold. “The end’s not for amateurs.”

He laughed, a dry, humorless sound, before producing a small, blinking sphere from the folds of his coat. He tossed it into the air, and it hovered just as her vortex absorbed it. A moment later, her wall of green cracked, segments falling apart like shattered panes of glass. A tremor shook her to the core as the man grinned through the rising wind, stepping closer.

“My name’s Jericho,” he said, his cigarette flickering in the gale. “Remember me after you fail.”

With a growl, Augur unleashed a cascade of psychic energy, green tendrils whipping forward in arcs that could have sliced steel. But Jericho moved with inhuman grace, ducking and weaving as if he could see seconds into the future. The glowing green field weakened further as her attacks missed, and the tsunami roared victoriously closer, devouring entire districts of Neo Atlantis.

Echoes of the Abyss

Through gritted teeth, Augur searched for a spark—the memory of why she had chosen this forsaken corner of a dying world to make her stand. Her eyes darted to the ground and found it: a tiny seashell, impossibly out of place amidst the shattered concrete.

Time seemed to slow as her mind filled with the sound of waves long past. The green vortex whipped violently outward, ignited by sheer determination. Jericho was thrown back, his makeshift weapon fizzling to nothing. Augur staggered once, her vision swimming, but she remained standing.

The tsunami was upon her now, a leviathan ready to devour everything she had sworn to protect. She raised her arms, focusing all her power into a final, blinding surge. At the precipice of destruction, she roared against the storm, a single voice challenging the unfathomable.

A shockwave erupted, green light burning brighter than the sun.

The Whispering Tide

When the light faded, the world was still. The tsunami had been reduced to mist, the ocean inexplicably calm. Augur fell to her knees, gasping for air, her body trembling from exhaustion. Around her, the echoes of destruction remained, but in the silence that followed, new sounds emerged: faint voices, human voices, crying out in disbelief. Survivors.

Jericho, bruised but alive, limped out of the shadows, cigarette gone but his cocky smirk unbroken. “Well,” he muttered, “I’ll be damned.”

She glared at him, the faint glow of green still flickering around her. Then, without another word, she began walking toward the voices of the living, the tiny seashell firmly in her grip.

Behind them, the last wave receded into the horizon, a whisper of what it had once been.
