Ailish adjusted her pointed ear cuffs, making sure they peeked through the Cascade Falls of teal hair that framed her face. She stood before her companions, one hand resting on the hilt of her crystalline blade, the other clutching the charm hanging from her layered necklaces. The lavender sky of Elarua rippled above them, its soft hues blending with her pastel armor embroidered with the sigil of the Blossom Guardians.
“This is madness,” Raen muttered, his forest-green cape fluttering with the breeze as his bow hung loosely at his side. “The Obscura can’t be defeated. Not now. Not ever.”
“Then let me be the madness,” Ailish retorted, her voice steady but fierce. The charm warmed against her palm, pulsing faintly with a soft golden light. “What we fight for is worth every risk. You’ve seen firsthand what the Obscura’s darkness does to the lands — do you really want to keep running?”
Raen looked away, but didn’t answer. Beside him, Tova, the group’s alchemist, adjusted her wide-brimmed hat and knelt to triple-check her satchel of potions. The gnarled staff she carried glinted faintly in the light. “We don’t have the luxury of debating this any further,” she interjected. “The Obscura spreads with every passing second. If Ailish believes the Lunar Blossom amulet has the power it was said to hold, then we must trust her.”
Ailish felt a pang of gratitude at Tova’s loyalty. Still, her gaze drifted toward the distant horizon where tendrils of shadow writhed like smoke, slowly choking out what was left of the vibrant landscape. Every step closer placed them squarely in danger, but there was no turning back now.
The soft light from the amulet flared slightly as she let go of it and turned toward the group. “Here’s the plan. Raen, you’ll take position on the ledge above the Obsidian Cliffs. Tova, I’ll need protective wards covering the main approach. The rest,” she paused, gripping the crystalline blade tighter, “is up to me.”
No one argued this time. There was tension, yes, but also understanding. They all had roles to play, and Ailish’s was to wield the ancient strength hidden within that tiny charm pressed against her skin.
As they broke camp and began their trek toward the Cliffs, her striking teal hair caught the last of the daylight, glowing faintly against her armor. It was the kind of beauty the bards sung of — ethereal, otherworldly — but for Ailish, it was merely a mask for the heavy burden she carried. She wasn’t just a cosplayer pretending to be some fantastical warrior. She was their last hope.
They reached the base of the cliff by nightfall. Ailish gazed up at the shrouded summit, now glowing faintly with an inky, malevolent radiance. Death waited there, but so did salvation. She adjusted the charm, whispered a small prayer under her breath, and stepped forward.
The time for dreaming was over. The fight for Elarua had begun.
