Detective Cora Rae adjusted her gloves as she surveyed the abandoned subway tunnel beneath the city. The sharp click of her high-heeled boots against the tiled floor echoed through the silence. Her black latex coat clung to her figure, providing both style and practicality in the perpetual dampness. She kept her long, straight hair tied into a severe ponytail; she couldn’t have distractions tonight.
Tonight wasn’t just another missing person case. This was different. Intense. The victim, a model named Serena Dain, had vanished during a fashion shoot two weeks ago. Witnesses’ accounts from the set were bizarre—glowing ripples on the air, voices that no one could trace, and an overpowering scent of ozone. Cora had ignored the implications at first. But now, standing here beneath the city amidst fading clues, she couldn’t shake the thought that something unnatural was playing its hand.
“Detective?” Her partner, Officer Mateo Cruz, jogged up to her side, slightly out of breath. His more relaxed brown leather jacket and unpolished demeanor was a clear contrast to her meticulous appearance. “Let’s hope you’ve got something. I’m freezing down here, and the underground vibe is giving me goosebumps.”
She ignored his remarks, her focused gaze locked on a faded symbol scratched into the side of the wall. It was angular and alien, almost luminescent under her flashlight. She traced it lightly with her gloved fingers and felt something pulse back—almost alive.
“Ever seen anything like this?” she asked, turning her head just enough to catch his reaction in her peripheral vision.
“Nope, and honestly, I don’t want to. Let me guess—cultists?” Mateo joked half-heartedly. Cora didn’t laugh. Her intuition had already dismissed anything as mundane as cultists weeks ago.
Cora knelt and placed her small black tablet on the ground, syncing it to the digital files from the case. Cross-checking that symbol might take a while, but lucky for her, patience was her strongest ally. The image popped up on her screen, compared against old police files, ancient texts, and even unverified conspiracy forums. And there it was—something close, though not identical.
“This isn’t from any known language,” Cora murmured, her brow furrowed. “But it’s transmitting something. Look at the interference—it’s encrypted.”
“Encrypted signals from an ancient subway wall? Really, Detective?” Mateo’s sarcasm broke through again, but there was a tinge of nervousness in his voice. He wasn’t entirely sold on the logic of the situation, yet he couldn’t deny the unease spreading through his chest.
Before she could reply, the faint hum turned into a piercing noise, loud enough to make Cora recoil. Her earpiece sparked, and both she and Mateo instinctively backed away from the wall. As she reached to lower the volume, they saw it—lines of blinding blue light darting across the tunnel like veins of electricity. It coalesced into a doorway, shimmering and unstable.
“You’re seeing this too, right?” Mateo shouted over the din.
“Shut up and stay close,” Cora snapped, unholstering her stun gun. Whatever was about to happen, she knew one thing for sure: it wasn’t in her handbook.
As the light began to settle into the semblance of a portal, a silhouette appeared on the other side. Cora’s fingers twitched around her weapon. But as the figure stepped through, her breath hitched. Standing before her was Serena Dain, dressed in a flowing, alien-like symbiote suit—a mirror of the sleek, latex outfit the model had worn in her last photoshoot. Yet her eyes, once bright and human, now glowed an eerie white.
“Detective,” Serena said, her voice smooth but inhuman. “You shouldn’t have come here.”
The mystery had only begun.
