Chapter 1: The Glimmering Room
The soft glow of fairy lights reflected in the mirror as Emilia stood before it, adjusting her delicate top buns. The gentle purple and pink hues bathed her face in a serene light, and her soft pink outfit hugged her frame with the kind of comfort one only found after years of searching. There was something almost otherworldly about the tranquility of the moment, numbing her senses. The room—plush bedding, cozy blankets, and an air infused with lavender—was her safe space. Or at least, it had been.
Tonight, however, the familiar warmth of the room didn’t feel right. Goosebumps rose across her arms as a quiet unease crept into her bones. Standing in front of her mirror, Emilia moved one of her buns slightly, tugging at it, lost in an unknown but growing discomfort that made her check over her shoulder. The fairy lights flickered—an unusual glitch in their constant glow.
Her reflection in the mirror blinked.
Chapter 2: The Shadow She Never Knew
Emilia froze, the breath in her chest burning with fear. She hadn’t moved her eyes and yet…the reflection—her reflection—had blinked. She turned back to the mirror, facing herself dead-on, but everything seemed normal now. Her heart thudded faster, and her mind raced. “Probably exhaustion,” she whispered, forcing a smile to reassure herself.
The quiet serenity of her room was now a heavy weight, a pressing force she could not define. A tap sounded behind her; succinct, deliberate. Her legs wouldn’t move, but she instinctively knew—she wasn’t alone anymore. The tap clicked again, and this time she turned back to the mirror, flexing her fingers tightly around the edge of the dresser.
The reflection directly behind hers did not belong to her.
A figure stood just out of focus, its face shrouded by an unnatural blur. But what chilled Emilia to the bone was that it mimicked her hairstyle—two neat top buns, as if crafted by hands that belonged to something not human altogether.
Chapter 3: Trending Until My Last Breath
Sweat dripped down Emilia’s neck as she tried to wake herself from what she hoped was a fever dream. Her fingers curled tighter against the wooden vanity as the shadowy figure behind her tilted its head to one side… then the other.
“We look the same now, don’t we?” the reflection whispered.
Emilia’s heart pounded violently, but she couldn’t speak. The shadow rippled, its features shifting until the modeled blur of its face solidified into…her own. The figure was now a perfect copy of Emilia, except for a revolting grin plastered on its lips—something she would never wear herself.
“It fits so well,” the copy continued, running its fingers down the soft pink fabric of its stolen outfit, matching Emilia’s perfectly. But before Emilia could react, the copy stepped forward—a hand reaching through the glass. Instinctively, Emilia lashed out, swiping the back of her hand through the air. The glass shattered, sending shards across her plush bedding and clean white carpet.
The shadow was gone. Her reflection was hers again.
Emilia fell to her knees, panting, trying to believe the nightmare was over. But then her phone buzzed, breaking the icy grip of silence now clinging to her room. Slowly, she lifted it from the nightstand.
A new social media notification was waiting for her.
Someone she didn’t know had tagged her in a picture. Hands trembling, Emilia opened the alert. There she was… in the photo… her face. But it wasn’t just any picture. It was a photo of her outside her own house, right at this very moment.
