The Reflection’s Call
The woman in the mirror was her, no question about it—except her other self was moving when she wasn’t. Her double leaned closer, resting its hands on the edge of the vanity on its side, eyes meeting Amelia’s with a piercing intensity. Amelia sucked in a breath. She knew all the stories, but none of them prepared her for this.
“What do you want?” Her voice came out steadier than she felt.
Her reflection’s lips curled into a smile. “To ask you the same thing.”
A shiver ran through her spine. The reflection wasn’t matching her movements at all now—the uncanny nature of it only made her pulse quicken. She felt she should look away, break the connection, but her body refused to comply. Instead, she became hyperaware of her surroundings: the flickering candle on her dresser, the soft drapes moving as the window cracked open, the low hum that seemed to intensify with each breath.
The Other Side
Amelia wanted to scream for help, but her legs moved on their own—and not in the direction of the door. Instead, she found herself stepping toward her own reflection. The mirror seemed to stretch along the sides like liquid glass, warping slightly at the edges. She reached out, fingertips touching the cool surface, half expecting it to push back. Instead, her hand passed through. Viscous and humming like static electricity, it pulled her in with a force gentle but unyielding.
On the other side, she emerged into a room eerily similar to her own—but not quite right. The colors were more vivid, more intense, and yet there was a shadow lingering in the air, as though this place existed just beyond the reach of light. Her reflection stood, now corporeal and standing a few feet away, wearing the same delicate lace and satin ensemble but with an aura of command far beyond Amelia’s.
“Your world doesn’t have to end at the surface,” the reflection whispered, stepping closer. “I can show you more, if you’re brave enough to see.”
Before Amelia could speak or even consider whether she wanted to know what ‘more’ meant, the reflection grabbed her hand and pulled her deeper into the glowing shadows. And like her, Amelia didn’t resist.
