“Should I?” she countered, turning fully toward him. The breeze caught strands of her hair, whipping them lazily across her face. “You\u2019ve dragged me out here to the middle of nowhere with vague warnings about \u2018finding the truth.\u2019 It\u2019s not exactly confidence-inspiring.”<\/p>\n
Eli smirked, but it was faint, almost begrudging. “The truth isn\u2019t something you\u2019re meant to trust. It\u2019s something you\u2019re meant to kneel before.”<\/p>\n
“Stop doing that!” Sera snapped, her voice echoing across the clearing. She turned sharply, pacing toward the lake before spinning back around to face him again. “Stop talking in riddles. Stop grinning like you’re the smartest person in the room. I came here because I thought\u2014”<\/p>\n
“You thought there might be something? Between us, I mean.” Eli interrupted, stepping closer with deliberate care. His tone was gentler than before, though a mischievous edge lingered. “Tell me I\u2019m wrong.”<\/p>\n
Her throat tightened, but she held his gaze. “Why did you bring me here?” she asked instead, her voice soft now, almost pleading. Though her hands remained fisted at her sides, everything else about her stance seemed to yield.<\/p>\n
Eli hesitated. A shadow crossed his features that no amount of sunlight could chase away. “If I told you the truth, it would swallow you whole, Sera. You\u2019d drown in it.”<\/p>\n
