Maisie Arlen perched herself on a worn, tufted armchair near the window. She always liked this particular spot\u2014the perfect blend of seclusion and people-watching. The Twist<\/h2>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re wrong,\u201d Darren said, leaning forward slightly. His voice was low but insistent. \u201cWe\u2019re not different<\/em>. We\u2019re just scared. You\u2019re scared that I\u2019ll pull you into chaos, and maybe I\u2019m scared you\u2019ll turn me into someone boring. But you know what\u2019s worse? Walking away when we haven\u2019t even stopped to look at what we could be.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her breath hitched. The sincerity in his voice shook something loose inside her, like a knot unraveling too quickly. She wanted to argue, but his words forced her to face what she’d been trying to ignore: that her fear of losing herself had made her forget how much he\u2019d brought out in her.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo what now?\u201d she whispered, her voice barely audible over the clatter of cups being stacked behind the counter.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know yet. But I\u2019m here. And I think that\u2019s a start.\u201d His hand reached tentatively for hers, stopping just short of making contact. \u201cBut you have to decide if it\u2019s enough.\u201d<\/p>\n
